Professional Outreach Programs in the Schools

What is POPS?

POPS stands for Professional Outreach Program in the School and is managed by the Utah State Board of Education and sponsored by the Utah State Legislature, supports arts education in Utah’s public schools by bringing professional arts organizations’ educational programs to schools for free or subsidized costs. The goal of the POPS organization is to connect schools, teachers, administrators but especially students with high quality arts learning experiences with professional artists. POPS support the state’s core arts standards and strives to provide equalized arts education opportunities for all Utah schools.

There are 13 different POPS organizations that provide arts instruction in dance, media arts, theater, music and visual arts to schools across the state of Utah, all 42 school districts. The opportunity to partner with a POPS organization is available to every school.

Services offered by the POPS organizations include lecture demonstrations or assemblies, arts instruction in the classroom, teacher professional development workshops, concerts and performances. Some services are brought to the school, other services allow students to visit an auditorium, museum, or studio.

How do I get a POPS organization to come to my school?

Visit the programs page of this website for an introduction into each of the 13 POPS organizations. Once you have found an organization you are interested in – maybe they provide experiences in an art form not offered at your school or that you know your students will enjoy – click on the button to visit their site. This will take you to the organizations list of educational programs available to your school. Use their website to contact them directly or use the contact information found below. You communicate with POPS organizations directly.

*Note: POPS work on a three – to – five year rotation to make sure the entire is serviced with educational arts program, so the organization you are interested in scheduling with may not be in your area immediately. Also, although POPS organizations achieve a one-to-one match of public funding from private sources they do not offer all services free, some are only subsidized, but still very affordable.
